Large magnetostriction in Fe-based alloys predicted by density functional theory
نویسندگان
چکیده
Through systematic density functional calculations using the full potential linearized augmented plane-wave method, extraordinary large magnetostrictions are found in Fe-based alloys with appropriate mixing of metalloid and 5d element. For instance, tetragonal magnetostrictive coefficients of Fe87.5Pt6.25Ga6.25 and Fe75Pt6.25Ge18.75 in their model structures can reach to +943 ppm and −3553 ppm, respectively. This was assigned to the availability of nonbonding states around the Fermi level and the large spin-orbit coupling of 5d atoms. The effects of distribution patterns of 5d and metalloid elements and their hybridization are discussed to provide insights for further experimental explorations.

Large-scale first-principles determination of anisotropic mechanical properties of magnetostrictive Fe–Ga alloys
Magnetostrictive Fe1 xGax alloys, as a new class of smart materials, have great potential in sensing and actuator applications. However, the fundamental understanding of the anisotropic elastic responses at high Ga concentration remains one of the most challenging problems for the binary alloys. Here, we apply the density functional theory and large-scale ab initio molecular dynamics simulation...
متن کاملExperimental exploration of the origin of magnetostriction in single crystalline iron
The magnetostrictive atomic strain in a pure Fe single crystal was measured by differential x-ray absorption spectroscopy. The obtained tetragonal magnetostriction constant, (3/2)λ100, was determined to be 45 ppm, consistent with the previously reported theoretical value calculated from a spin-orbit coupling theory. These results provide a foundation for understanding the origin of magnetostric...
متن کاملEffect of carbon addition on the single crystalline magnetostriction of Fe-X (X = Al and Ga) alloys
The effect of carbon addition on the magnetostriction of Fe–Ga and Fe–Al alloys was investigated and is summarized in this study. It was found that the addition of carbon generally increased the magnetostriction over binary alloys of Fe–Ga and Fe–Al systems. The formation of carbide in the Fe–Ga–C alloys with a composition near D03 phase region decreased the magnetostriction drastically. Fe–Al–...
متن کاملMagnetic domains in magnetostrictive Fe–Ga alloys
Lorentz microscopy was applied to the observation of magnetic domains in iron-gallium (Fe–Ga) alloys. Results did not show any link between the magnetic domains and the magnetostriction enhancement by Ga addition, but did reveal that the drastic decrease in magnetostriction for Fe–31.2 at. % Ga was due to the presence of large scale precipitates. Magnetic domain features did not change in the a...
متن کاملMagnetisation and Magnetostriction of Rapidly Quenched Rare, Earth-iron-boron Alloys
Tb-Fe-B alloys have been melt spun and data obtained for the room temperature magnetisation and magnetostriction as functions of applied field and composition. Small additions of La (w 5 at. %) leave the magnetisation unchanged but substantially reduce the magnetostriction. Results are compared with sputtered binary metallic Tb/Fe alloys.
